What to wear to a massage (including Thai and sports massage)

What to wear to a massage depends on the style. Here is what to wear for table, Thai and sports massage, what to bring and how draping works.

Ready to Improve your life?

Wear whatever is comfortable and easy to change out of. For most table massages, you undress only to your comfort level and stay covered with a sheet the whole time. For Thai massage, you stay fully clothed in loose, stretchy clothes. For sports massage, athletic shorts and a tank or sports bra work well.

If you are new to massage, the clothing question can feel awkward. It should not. Here is exactly what to expect at Transcending Health, style by style.

What should you wear to a regular massage?

For most massage on a table, like restorative massage or deep tissue massage, you change in private after your therapist steps out. You can leave on as much clothing as you like.

Many people undress to their underwear. Some keep on shorts or a tank top. All of these are fine. Your therapist will adjust how they work, and they will never ask you to remove more than you want to.

Come in clothing that is easy to take off and put back on, especially if you plan to head back to work after. Leave jewelry at home if you can, or take it off before your session.

How does draping work?

Draping means you are covered with a sheet and often a blanket. Your therapist uncovers only the area they are working on, then covers it again before moving on. Private areas stay covered at all times.

If you get cold, warm, or feel uneasy about any area being uncovered, say so. We want you comfortable from start to finish.

What should you wear to a Thai massage?

Thai massage is done fully clothed. Your therapist uses assisted stretching, gentle rocking and rhythmic pressure, so you need clothes that move with you.

Good choices include:

  • Yoga pants, joggers or loose athletic pants.
  • A soft, fitted t-shirt or long-sleeve top.
  • Socks, if you like. Bare feet are fine too.

Skip jeans, belts, stiff fabrics and very short shorts, since many stretches move your legs in wide ranges. At our clinic, Thai massage is done on a table, and it is $120 for 60 minutes.

What should you wear to a sports massage?

For sports massage, think of what you wear to the gym. Athletic shorts and a sports bra or tank top let your therapist reach your legs, hips, back and shoulders easily. Some sports massage uses stretching and movement, and athletic clothes make that simple.

You can also undress and be draped, like a regular table massage. Tell your therapist what you prefer when you arrive. Sports massage is $150 for 60 minutes.

What about prenatal massage?

For prenatal massage, wear something loose and comfortable. You will undress to your comfort level and be draped, and we use pillows and positioning to keep you and your baby comfortable. Prenatal massage is $150 for 60 minutes.

What should you bring to your appointment?

  • A list of medications and any health conditions.
  • Notes about pain or injuries you want us to focus on.
  • Your HSA card or CareCredit if you plan to use them. We do not bill insurance.
  • A water bottle for after your session.
  • A hair tie if you have long hair.

Parking is free at our clinic at 1445 Rio Road East, Suite 201 F.

Should you shower before a massage?

It is a kind thing to do if you are coming from a workout, but it is not required. If you are coming straight from the gym, a quick rinse or a change of clothes is plenty. Please skip strong perfume or cologne, since some clients and staff are sensitive to scents.

What should you wear after your massage?

Think about what comes next. If you are heading home to rest, bring something cozy. If you are going back to work, pick clothes you can put on easily without rushing. In the colder months, bring a warm layer. Many people feel a little chilly after a massage as their body relaxes, and a sweater or jacket makes the trip home more comfortable.

If you had oil or lotion used during your session, darker or older clothes are a safe choice, since a small amount can transfer to fabric.

Is it okay to wear makeup?

Yes. Just know that face cradles and any face or scalp work may smudge makeup. If you are heading somewhere after, bring a small kit to touch up.

What if you feel nervous about undressing?

That is very common, and you are in control. You can stay fully clothed for many styles. You can also ask for a style that works well over clothing, like Thai massage. Talk to us when you book or when you arrive and we will help you choose.

Our guide to what to expect at your first massage walks through the whole visit, from check-in to checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to take off my underwear for a massage?

No. Many people keep their underwear on, and that is completely fine. Undress only to your comfort level.

Can I wear a sports bra during a massage?

Yes. Your therapist can work around it. If they need to reach your upper back, they may ask if you are comfortable unhooking it, and you can always say no.

What shoes should I wear?

Anything easy to slip off and on. You will take your shoes off for every massage style we offer.
