You do not have to tip your massage therapist at Transcending Health. Tips for our providers are accepted and appreciated, but they are never required, and how much you give, if anything, is completely up to you.

I know tipping can feel confusing, especially when customs vary so much from place to place. So I want to explain our approach plainly, share why we set it up this way, and offer a few other ways to show appreciation if a tip is not right for you.

What is Transcending Health's tipping policy?

Our policy is simple. If you would like to leave a tip for your provider, we welcome it and pass it along. If you would rather not, that is fully respected, and it will never affect the care you receive.

We do not add tips automatically, we do not suggest a required amount, and we will not prompt you with a percentage. You can find our other booking and payment details on our policies page.

Why don't we require tips?

Many of the people we see are dealing with pain, recovering from an injury, or managing a long-term condition. For them, massage is part of taking care of their health, and I do not want an unclear tipping expectation to become one more source of stress.

We also want our pricing to be honest and easy to understand. When you book a therapeutic massage with evaluation at $130 for 60 minutes, or deep tissue at $150 for 60 minutes, that is the price of your session. A tip is a choice you make, not a hidden part of the cost.

That said, our providers work hard and care deeply about the people they see. When someone chooses to leave a tip, it means a lot to them.

Is tipping a massage therapist customary?

It depends on the setting. In some spas and resorts, tipping is a common expectation. In clinical or health-focused settings, practices vary more, and some offices do not accept tips at all.

Massage therapists work in many kinds of places. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes in its Occupational Outlook Handbook that massage therapists work in settings ranging from spas and hotels to offices of physicians and chiropractors, as well as in private practice. With that much variety, it is no surprise people are unsure what is expected.

Rather than guessing, the easiest thing is to ask. At our clinic, the answer is that tips are welcome and never required.

How much should I tip if I want to?

There is no right amount here, and I am not going to give you a number. Some people leave a tip after every visit, some only on special occasions, and many leave none at all. All of those are fine.

If you decide to tip, think about what feels comfortable for your budget and your experience. A tip in any amount is appreciated. Not tipping is also completely acceptable.

If cost is a concern in general, there are better ways to save than skipping a tip you feel you owe. Memberships save 5 to 15 percent on massage, and our 6-Week Restoration Plans are 10 percent off. Those options are built for people who want regular care at a lower cost.

How do I leave a tip at the clinic?

If you choose to tip, you can do it when you check out at the front desk. Just let us know you would like to add a tip for your provider, and we will make sure it reaches them.

For those curious about the money side, tips are considered income to the person who receives them. The IRS explains how tipped workers keep records of and report tips, which is one reason we handle tips carefully and keep things transparent.

Please do not feel pressure in the moment. No one on our team will ask you for a tip or treat you differently based on what you decide.

Are there other ways to show appreciation?

Absolutely. If you loved your session but a tip is not in the cards, here are a few things that mean just as much to our team:

  • Tell your therapist what helped. Specific feedback makes the next session even better.
  • Leave an honest online review describing your experience.
  • Refer a friend or family member who could use some care.
  • Rebook when your body tells you it is time, so your therapist can build on the work.
  • Give a custom gift card to someone you care about, created over the phone or in person.

Good communication is one of the best gifts you can give any therapist. Our post on how to ask for less pressure during massage shows how a few clear words can shape a better session.

Does tipping change the quality of care?

No. Every person who walks through our door gets the same attention and the same standard of care, whether they tip or not. That is a commitment I take seriously.

What matters most for a good session is that your therapist understands your goals and your body. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health encourages people to talk openly with their massage therapist and their health care providers about their health. That conversation does far more for your results than any tip ever could.

If you want to explore the types of sessions we offer, our massage in Charlottesville page walks through every option, from restorative massage with Keanen to deep tissue with Bee, fascial counterstrain with Yeda, and Rolfing structural integration with me.

Frequently asked questions

Will my therapist be upset if I do not tip?

No. Tips are never required at Transcending Health, and our providers understand that. You will receive the same care and respect whether you tip or not.

Can I tip on a gift card or membership visit?

Yes, if you would like to. Just let the front desk know at checkout. It is still entirely optional, and no tip is expected.

Is there a suggested tip amount?

No. We do not suggest or require any amount. If you choose to tip, give whatever feels right for you.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and cared for from the moment you arrive. When you are ready, book your next massage online, or call us at 434-465-2905 with any questions.
