Ready to Improve your life?

SoftWave therapy and a cortisone shot are two very different ways people try to calm stubborn tendon and joint pain. A cortisone shot is a steroid injection given by a doctor to reduce inflammation in one spot. SoftWave is a non-invasive acoustic wave treatment applied over the skin, usually as a series of sessions.

I am Drew Edmondson from Transcending Health in Charlottesville. We offer SoftWave, but we do not give injections. A cortisone shot is a medical decision for you and your doctor. Here is a plain, balanced look at both so you can have a better conversation about your options.

What is a cortisone shot?

Cortisone is a corticosteroid, a medicine that reduces inflammation. A physician injects it into or near a painful joint, tendon sheath or bursa. Many people notice less pain within days, and for some the relief lasts weeks or months.

Because it is a medication, a cortisone shot comes with medical screening and possible side effects that your doctor will explain. Doctors often limit how many injections they give in the same area. Mayo Clinic has a clear overview of what to expect from a cortisone shot.

What is SoftWave therapy?

SoftWave is a form of acoustic wave therapy, sometimes grouped with shockwave therapy. A handheld applicator sends sound waves into the tissue under the skin. There are no needles and no medication. A session is fairly quick, and most people go back to their normal day afterward.

SoftWave is designed to support the body's own repair process in the treated area rather than switch off inflammation. Research on acoustic wave therapy for conditions like tendon pain is growing, but results vary from person to person, and it does not work for everyone. We never promise a specific outcome.

Who might lean toward each option?

Some people want fast relief from a flare so they can get through a busy season, and they are comfortable with an injection. That is a conversation to have with your doctor.

Others prefer to avoid needles and medication, have already had injections, or want to try a non-invasive option first. SoftWave may be worth discussing for them. Common areas people ask us about include the knee, the Achilles tendon, the elbow, the shoulder and the bottom of the foot.

These are not always either-or choices. Some people use both at different times, with their doctor's input. If you have had a recent injection, tell us before you book SoftWave so we can plan timing safely.

What does SoftWave look like at Transcending Health?

We start by asking about your pain, your history and any imaging or diagnosis you already have. If SoftWave seems like a reasonable fit, a typical plan is a series of sessions spaced out over several weeks. A single session is $225, a package of 6 is $1,225, and a package of 10 is $2,000. We accept HSA cards and CareCredit, and we do not bill insurance.

Many people pair SoftWave with hands-on work or simple strengthening, because tendons usually need gradual loading to feel strong again. You can learn more on our SoftWave therapy in Charlottesville page and see all prices on our pricing page.

What should I ask my doctor or provider?

Good questions make for better decisions. Before a cortisone shot or a SoftWave plan, you might ask:

  • What do you think is causing my pain, and is inflammation a big part of it?
  • What are the possible side effects or risks for me?
  • How soon should I expect to notice a change, and how will we measure it?
  • What should I be doing for strength and movement alongside this treatment?

A provider who explains the plan clearly, including what is uncertain, is a good sign. You should never feel pressured into either option.

When should I see a doctor first?

Please get a medical evaluation before SoftWave or any other treatment if you have:

  • A sudden pop or snap followed by weakness, which can signal a tendon tear
  • A joint that is hot, red and swollen, especially with a fever
  • Trouble bearing weight, or a joint that gives way or locks
  • Pain after a fall or accident
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness that is spreading

Also check with your doctor if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, have a pacemaker, or have a bleeding or clotting disorder. SoftWave does not replace a diagnosis, and we will tell you if we think you need to see a physician first.

Frequently asked questions

Is SoftWave a replacement for a cortisone shot?

Not exactly. They work in different ways and suit different situations. SoftWave is a non-invasive option some people try first or instead, but the choice about an injection belongs with you and your doctor.

Does SoftWave hurt?

Most people describe a tapping or buzzing feeling. It can feel tender over a sore spot, and we adjust the intensity to what you can comfortably handle.

How many SoftWave sessions will I need?

It depends on the area and how your body responds. Many plans use several sessions over a few weeks, which is why we offer packages of 6 and 10.
