At Transcending Health, SoftWave is not billed to insurance. We do accept HSA cards and CareCredit as payment. Whether your HSA will treat SoftWave as a qualified medical expense depends on your plan and your situation, so please check with your plan administrator before you book.
I know cost is a big part of deciding on any new treatment. Here is a clear look at what SoftWave costs at our clinic, how payment works and what to ask your HSA provider.
What does SoftWave cost?
Our current SoftWave therapy pricing is:
- Single session: $225
- Package of 6 sessions: $1,225
- Package of 10 sessions: $2,000
You can see these prices alongside all our other services on our pricing page.
Packages lower the cost per visit. The 6-session package works out to about $204 per session, and the 10-session package works out to $200 per session. Whether a package makes sense depends on your plan, which we talk through after your first visit.
Why don't you bill insurance?
We keep our pricing simple and paid at the time of your visit. That means you know the price up front, and there are no surprise bills months later. It also means we do not submit claims for you.
If you want to try to get reimbursed by your insurance on your own, ask your insurance company how they handle out-of-network claims for acoustic wave or shockwave therapy. We can give you a detailed receipt for your records. Many plans do not cover SoftWave, so it is worth asking before you count on it.
Can you use an HSA for SoftWave?
You can pay with your HSA card at our clinic. Whether the expense qualifies is a separate question.
IRS rules in Publication 502 describe medical expenses as costs for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease. Expenses that only benefit general health do not count. Some plans also ask for a letter of medical necessity from your doctor.
Here is a simple checklist:
- Call your HSA administrator or check their online portal.
- Ask whether acoustic wave or shockwave therapy is an eligible expense under your plan.
- Ask whether they need a letter of medical necessity, and what it should say.
- If needed, talk with your doctor about that letter.
- Keep your receipts and any letters together.
I am not a tax advisor, and nothing here is tax advice. If you are unsure, check with a qualified tax professional. For more on this topic, our post on paying for massage with an HSA or CareCredit covers the same basics in more detail.
How does CareCredit work for SoftWave?
CareCredit is a health care credit card. If you are approved, you can use it to pay for services at providers who accept it, including our clinic. Some CareCredit offers include promotional financing.
Read the terms carefully. Some promotions use deferred interest, which means interest can be charged back to the purchase date if the balance is not paid in full by the end of the promotion. Only finance what you are confident you can pay off in time.
How do you start with SoftWave?
Your first visit starts with a conversation about your history and goals and a look at how you move. If SoftWave seems like a good fit, many people start with a single session to see how they respond before deciding on a package.
From there, we suggest a plan based on what we find and how you respond. Some people pair SoftWave with massage in Charlottesville or corrective exercise, which we can schedule in the same visit or on separate days.
What should you expect from SoftWave?
SoftWave uses acoustic waves applied through the skin over a sore area. Most people feel pressure or a tapping sensation. Sessions are short, and you can usually go back to normal activity right away.
Results vary from person to person. We cannot promise a specific outcome, and SoftWave is not right for every condition. During your first visit we will talk through whether it makes sense for you, and we will tell you if you should check with your doctor first.
What should you bring to your first SoftWave visit?
Bring a list of your medications, any recent imaging reports and notes about when your pain started and what makes it better or worse. Wear clothing that lets us reach the sore area easily. If you plan to use your HSA, bring your card and ask for a detailed receipt.
Is SoftWave worth the cost?
That depends on your goals, your budget and how you respond. For some people, a short series fits into a bigger plan for a stubborn problem. For others, massage, exercise or another approach may be a better first step. We would rather help you choose well than sell you a package you do not need.
